Paraty

Paraty, to the west of Angra dos Reis, is a charming beach resort and colonial town. The scenery here is breathtaking, with the expansiveness of the sea and the backdrop of the mountains.

During colonial days the Paraty harbor was an important site for the transportation of precious metals and sugarcane. Several fortifications were built in the surrounding areas to protect the harbor from invaders and thieves.

On a special, explore the highlights of old Paraty in the company of the town's citizens, who play host to you during your stay. The historic heart of the city is contained within seven square blocks. Many of the town's oldest buildings are privately-owned houses. One of the most fascinating structures is the Igreja do Rosario, a slave's church built in 1725, with a statue of St. Benedict. The peaceful harbor is an excellent place to observe the fishermen in their colorful boats and to sail in a Bahian style schooner.
